Despite a bum knee, I have been blessed to spend the most amazing, long holiday weekend with my family. Sunset happy hours with neighbors on the block, beach, pool time, bbq's at Gigi's, MORE beach, amazing meals and plenty of sunshine, has left me with a heart overflowing with joy, but a body that is exhausted!
How was your long weekend? I hope you enjoyed every minute with your dear families!
Tonight I thought I'd touch base about the concept of GEMS. GEMS is something we learn about in Redirecting Children's Behavior and is a beautiful way to strengthen relationships with children, therefore decreasing their need and desire to mis-behave.
GEM = Genuine Encounter Moment - A time when they call on us and we actually stop, get on their level, and connect with them...eye to eye & heart to heart.
This simple task does tons for how they feel (acknowledged, heard, understood, etc.) and it also does tons for us! GEMS give us a reason to slow down & acknowledge all the small little parts of life we might miss if it wasn't for a little teeny human pointing them out to us. "Momma, momma, look at the little baby rolly polly bug!" or "Dad, quick, come see the giant bubble sculpture I've created in the bath". It also gives us an opportunity to stop and communicate to our kids that we DO care about what they have to say and what is going on in their life.
We have a thousand reasons why we need to keep going, going, going. Why we can't slow down and why the to-do list HAS to keep us captive. But often this fast-paced lifestyle creates opportunities missed...to connect with the small little humans who we care about so deeply and who we so deeply WANT to have true connection with. GEMS can be quick or long, however you see fit in the moment, but absolutely make a difference in behavior, self-esteem and overall relationship strength.
Over the weekend, there's a lot of times where I missed the boat and the opportunity to give my little ones a GEM. And then there's also a lot where I jumped right on it and came running to be together with them. I can definitely say the moments of true togetherness were my favorite of the holiday weekend. Times that I stopped and felt my heart beating, looked into my kiddos eyes and felt their excitement about life. So tonight, as I fall into bed and crash SO hard, I'll choose to focus on all those great moments : ) and give myself grace for all the others.
