Sometimes, with out even realizing it, we can start to sound like broken
records to our kids…often saying the same exact thing 50 times a day,
every day. Get up, brush your hair, put on your shoes, don’t touch your
brother, calm down, eat your vegetables, clean your room, hang your towel
up, leave the dog alone, do your homework, etc. etc. etc! The list goes on
and on right? While this may seem like an absolutely unavoidable list of
commands that all parents NEED to give, it’s actually possible to change it
up and speak with our kids much differently. In ways that catch their
attention, make them smile, encourage critical thinking, and increase
cooperation.

In the Redirecting Children’s Class, we learn to pay attention to the WAY
we speak to our kids. After learning to listen to ourselves, we then start
practicing using questions (instead of commands), which causes children to
use their critical thinking skills and feel empowered, and to also get
creative with our requests. A few of my favorites are “Kids, you wanna fly
like pelicans up the stairs or crawl like turtles to the bath”, or “It’s
time to leave soon, do you want to leave now? Or stay and play for five
minutes, then hop in the car?”. It makes so much difference when we change
up delivery. Kids love it and change feels so good, both when we deliver it
AND our kids react differently!
