Honoring Veterans with Gratitude and Positive Parenting: A Fresh Start Family Gives Spotlight

by | November 11, 2024

Veterans Day is a special time in America, a day to honor and remember the remarkable commitment of our armed service members. Initially established as Armistice Day to commemorate the end of World War I in 1918, it was later renamed Veterans Day in 1954 to honor all military veterans. Across the U.S., the holiday is marked with parades, wreath-laying ceremonies, and moments of silence to recognize the sacrifices made by those who serve.

At Fresh Start Family, we’re celebrating Veterans Day in a way that aligns with our mission to support families. Through the Fresh Start Family Gives Program, we’re proud to offer FREE tuition to our Foundations Course for active-duty U.S. military families. This program is our way of giving back to those who give so much for our nation.

What Is the Fresh Start Family Gives Program?

Military families face unique challenges, from frequent relocations and deployments to navigating life far from loved ones and support systems. These brave families sacrifice much to serve our country, and we believe they deserve unwavering support.

Through the Fresh Start Family Gives Program, active-duty military members can access our comprehensive Foundations Course curriculum at no cost. This course provides tools and strategies for positive parenting, helping families create deeper connections, improve communication, and navigate challenges with confidence and grace.

Veterans Day Parenting Tips: Teaching Gratitude, Honoring Service, and Embracing Empathy

In addition to celebrating veterans, this day offers an opportunity to model and teach important values to our children. Here are a few ways to incorporate meaningful lessons into your family’s observance of Veterans Day:

1. Model Gratitude

Show your children what it means to express sincere thanks. If you see a veteran—whether they’re wearing a “Vietnam Vet” hat or in uniform—say, “Thank you for your service.” Let your kids witness this moment of appreciation, whether you’re at the airport, in line for food, or at a community event.

2. Teach Why Military Service Is Honorable

Help your children understand the depth of commitment military members show in serving their country. Talk about how service reflects values like bravery, dedication, and love for one’s community. Use “AND” statements to teach balanced perspectives—for instance, “It’s okay to disagree with certain government decisions AND still deeply respect the sacrifices of our military members.”

3. Educate with Inspiring Stories

Highlight stories of veterans who have demonstrated extraordinary service:

  • Desmond Doss: A WWII conscientious objector to carrying firearms, who received the Medal of Honor for saving countless lives as a medic during the Battle of Okinawa. His story was depicted in the film Hacksaw Ridge.
  • Dorothea Dix: The superintendent of Army nurses during the Civil War and a tireless advocate for mental health and female healthcare workers.
  • Pat Tillman: A professional NFL player who left his career to serve in Afghanistan, where he lost his life. His story is a testament to selflessness and dedication.

Why Positive Parenting Matters for Military Families

Military life often comes with unique stressors: deployments, relocations, and separation from loved ones can strain even the strongest families. Our Foundations Course provides the tools to handle these challenges while building a foundation of connection, respect, and mutual understanding.

Military parents who have participated in our Fresh Start Family GIVES program & foundations course have shared how it has transformed their family dynamics:

  • Carley: “This course gives you the confidence to start positive parenting regardless of where you are right now. We’re better equipped to respond instead of overreacting.”
  • Megan: “Life has been hectic since my husband returned from deployment. This course helped us tackle bedtime struggles with our young kids and gave us tools we’ll use again and again.”
  • Sarah: “After moving to a new country, this course helped me reconnect with my son in the midst of a huge transition. The strategies fit perfectly with unpredictable military schedules.”
