On today’s episode Wendy & Terry are bringing back their friend & mentor, Kathryn Kvols, for an interview to discuss compassionate discipline. Kathryn is the founder of the International Network for Children and Families, and the author of the renowned parenting book and course, Redirecting Children’s Behavior.
Learning to correct our children in a way that encourages connection is vital to having a long-term, close relationship built on respect, empathy & trust. Listen in as Wendy, Terry & Kathryn cover the seven steps for correction that connects the parent & the child, so that parents can stick to limits with firm kindness:
- Pause before you parent – Before having a conversation about misbehavior that needs corrected, wait until both the parent & the child are cooled off
- Ask for permission – Respectfully ask your child, “Is now a good time to talk?” “If now is not a good time, when would be a good time to discuss this situation?”
- Share your observation/what you noticed – not your judgement/blame/shame
- Don’t jump to conclusions – instead, ask your child “what happened?”
- Ask your child how he feels about what happened – Without judgement or a negative tone, ask “How do you feel about what happened?”
- Ask your child about the impact of their actions – This helps your child begin to understand how their behavior affects others
- Invite the child to do a make-up – This allows the child to repair their mistake & teaches the important life skills of being accountable for their actions, getting back into integrity with self & others, and how to restore/build relationships on trust
