Ending a Yelling Habit

During the months of April & May, we’re focusing on empowering ourselves to end the reactive & stressful habit of yelling.

Are you a yeller? I’ve definitely gotten a lot better, but I’m not proud to say that I’m still a yeller. Sometimes I wonder, is it a gene some of us were born with? Are there really parents out there that naturally stay calm when things start to spiral chaotically out of control? If yes, I’m impressed! Either way, I’m committed to keep working towards that place!

Over the last 8 years, this work has helped me change from a level 8 screamer (on a scale of 1 to 10) down to about a 2, meaning I rarely yell anymore, but when I do, yikes, I still freak myself (and my kids) out!  I’m a work in progress for sure but one thing I’ve learned over the years is that my yelling is “uncontrollable” is a false narrative that runs through my brain…not reality.

In all truth, what comes out of our mouths IS something that we can control.

  • Does it take a lot of courage, intention, commitment and WERKKKKKK? Heck yes!
  • Is it worth it? Heck yes!
  • Does it feel so good when you finally start to see yourself change for the better? Heck yes!
  • Does it feel incredible to see your children change as a result of you changing and modeling healthy & respectful behavior? HECK YASSSSSSS!

This week, I cover the first phrase of 10 from my latest article on Mother.ly10 Phrases to Say (or Tell Yourself) When You’re Tempted to Yell.  I’ll be pulling from this list over the next 8 weeks to empower us all.

I discuss the fear of “not knowing what to do” and how when we react to that feeling without pausing, we often react like a volcano because we THINK we need to be in control. In reality however, we were NOT designed to control other human beings, nor do many of us have a solid positive parenting education before our kids hit power surge stages of life (toddler years are the first to really challenge us!)….so we really shouldn’t just naturally know what to do.

It takes time to learn and we’re in this together with our kids. We’re learning just as much as them as we walk beside them down this wild path of parenthood.
