5 Minute Motivation – Ending the Yelling Habit (Phrase #7 to Help)

We’re focusing this month on empowering ourselves to end the reactive & stressful habit of yelling.

This week we’re looking at how to acknowledge when we are feeling angry & also stating the truth that it’s ok to feel mad!

In this video, I encourage parents to PAUSE when a stimulus (misbehavior) comes their way….then breathe and state how they feel (which is often angry).

Yelling can be a behavior we jump to quickly that we THINK makes us feel powerful, when actually we are feeling totally powerless! Stopping to just FEEL instead of thinking we have to know what to do immediately often will give us the space to choose a healthy response.

Anger is often an emotion that we label as bad, when in actuality, it’s a healthy, human emotion that CAN be used for good! If we use it as a spotlight to shine focus on areas that still need work in our homes, we can pour passion into continuous improvement instead of just judgement, condemnation & volatility that we often associate with the feeling of anger.

So this week, try it out. When your kids misbehave and you’re tempted to start screaming, instead boldly & firmly say “I FEEL ANGRY right now & that is ok”. Then move on to find a way to take care of yourself in that moment till you can get yourself back down to room temperature. Once you’ve felt yourself settle a bit, then you can move on to teach your kids the lesson you need to! Not only will they receive the lesson better & without shame, YOU will feel much better about how you delivered the teaching!
