5 Minute Motivation – Ending the Yelling Habit (I Saved my Fave Phrase for Last!)

We’re focusing this month on empowering ourselves to end the reactive & stressful habit of yelling.

This week we’re covering the last phrase in our 8 week series from my latest article on Mother.ly10 Phrases to Say (or Tell Yourself) When You’re Tempted to Yell.

I encourage us all to slow down and ask ourself…

“What am I scared of? And what if I didn’t have to be scared of that? How would I act?” 

The next time an unexpected, annoying or startling stimulus comes your way (misbehavior), see how fast you can ask yourself this question & let the answer guide you.

These are some common answers many of us will have to this question:

I’m scared of….

  • My kids hurting each other
  • Feeling disrespected
  • People judging me
  • Doing the wrong thing
  • Letting people walk all over me

Or scared that…

  • I’m a bad Mom (or Dad) because I don’t know what to do
  • I don’t have control over my kids
  • My kids will grow up to be entitled brats
  • People will think I’m a bad Mom (or Dad) if my kids act imperfectly
  • If I don’t throw the hammer, they won’t listen

Any of those sound familiar as things that go through our brain the second before we scream at our kids?

Most of us don’t stop to think about this, but this week we’re going to try! Asking ourselves this questions during our pause button or heart connector, allows us to get really clear on WHY we’re yelling at our kids to begin with.

After we’re clear on WHY we’re yelling, we can then deal with that thought in a reasonable / logical way instead of just skipping right over it in habit (with reactive yelling).

Once you have that answer, try then asking yourself “What if I didn’t have to be scared of that”….”How would I WANT to act”? or “What if I was confident that everything will be ok, what would I want to say?”

This question will be magical for you to realize the actions that define the REAL you….the loving, patient, calm, empathetic, kind, compassionate & service oriented person you REALLY are! That we ALL REALLY ARE!
