Summer Sanity Tip #2 – 5 Minute Motivation

by | June 25, 2018 | 0 comments

Alright families, we’re moving on to Tip #2 to Stay Sane this Summer with Kiddos in Tow!

Last week we talked about the importance of getting our kids out in nature…TURE nature, like streams, and rivers, and trails & the ocean!

This week, let’s talk about slowing down to really think about how we want to handle challenging situations. Easy peasy right? Slowing down is easy? Responding instead of reacting? We’re all nailing that one right?

Ha, I can just hear the laughter now.

I bet you most of us would agree that we resemble this cartoon character most days…do you remember him? Speedy Gonzales from Looney Tunes? I know I know…I’m aging myself, but he was a cool cat back in the 80’s and was hilarious. He could turn into “turbo mode” and get things done in lightning speed with out even thinking about it!

That happens to a lot of us when a challenging stimulus comes our way (misbehavior)…instead of pausing, putting our hand on our hearts & taking a deep breath to practice a pause button, we often will just react quickly out of habit with lecturing, nagging, shaming, yelling or fixing. Over time, this becomes such a habit that it’s incredibly hard to break!

How do we break the habit (even when it’s hard)? We just keep reminding ourselves:

  • Slowing down is GOOD
  • Thinking about your long term goals as a parent is GOOD
  • Finding a healthy intention is GOOD
  • Giving yourself some time to creatively come up with a solution is GOOD
  • Taking some deep breaths to calm your nervous system is GOOD
  • Modeling for your kids what intentionally responding vs. habitually reacting looks like is GOOD
  • Keeping the motto “Progress, not Perfection” is GOOD

So try it out this week and just notice how much calmer you feel when you pause for just a few seconds or minutes…then respond with integrity. Doing this will help your brain access it’s creativity that you NEED to parent with integrity, kindness & grace instead of fear, force, bribery and rewards.

Let me know how it goes!

If you didn’t see it yet, be sure to watch this 4 minute clip from the KTLA News in Los Angeles where I gave the 5 tips we’re discussing in this 5 week series. Click HERE to watch!
