Summer Sanity Tip #5 – 5 Minute Motivation

by | July 30, 2018 | 0 comments

Alright, we’ve made it to tip #5 of our 5 week series on staying sane this summer with kids in tow, using Positive Parenting Curriculum!

Let’s do a quick review of the strategies we covered in the last month & a half together:

1.) Build in as much time as possible outdoors, in true nature (beaches, trails, forests, open fields, trees, etc.) & limit screen time – Nature soothe everyone’s souls, especially kids’ and helps minimize misbehavior.

2.) Stop & breathe (pause) when misbehavior arises, then seek to understand & evaluate their needs – before you jump in to correct or scold, take a second and think about the meaning behind your child’s words. For example, are they acting jealous of the baby because they “need” to feel like they are loved & belong too?

3.) Implement proactive agreements to teach about why limits exist & empower kids to be part of the rule making – If there is an activity that always ends in an argument or tears (like leaving the pool or walking past the ice cream shop without going in) create a game plan and talk about it with your child. That way everyone knows what’s expected of them & why boundaries exists before they hit the tipping point.

4.) Harness the power of empathy to build trust & cooperation by validating their emotions — repeating their emotions back to them shows you’re listening and taking them seriously. even if you don’t think dropping their ice cream is a big deal, they still think it’s the end of the world.

This week, we’ve covering our final way to keep our sanity in full check: Setting Strong Limits & Sticking to them With Integrity!

5.) Set strong limits & stick to them with kindness, using the 4 step process: Agreements, Empathy, Restate Agreement, Choices

Did these 5 tips help you this summer to remain calm, see the integrity in your kids, find joy in your daily parenting walk, stick to your strong limits even when your kids were pushing back? I’d love to hear from you! Drop a comment below or shoot me an email ([email protected]) or DM through Instagram (@freshstartwendy) or Facebook (Fresh Start Family).

Cheers to enjoying the last few weeks of summer and cherishing the memories we’re making with our kiddos!
