It’s Black History Month, families, and we are so excited about our wonderful guest, Mijha Godfrey, who brings us beautiful insights about storytelling and books for kids with a focus on racial reconciliation and making a better world.
Mija Godfrey has always had a heart for social justice, which led her to pursue a career as a lawyer and a former affordable housing developer, and she is now the founder of Jambo Books, which we talk about on today’s episode!
Jambo, which means both “hello” and “welcome” in Swahili, is a book subscription service for children aged 0 – 13 where all the books feature lead characters who are children of color.
The stories in Jambo Books focus on the beauty of childhood, the joys of friendship and family, the thrill of new adventures, the wonderful tapestry that is the life of a child of color.
Mijha’s journey to founding Jambo Books is all grounded in her passion for helping parents raise children who expect and appreciate healthy inclusion and understand how to love those who are different from them.
She reminds us that the answer is not to pretend our children do not see color, but to teach them the beauty in our differences.
We are all united in our shared humanity.
Mijha seeks to encourage and help others to recognize the shared humanity between us all even in those who may not share the same experiences that we do.
Today Mijha and I discuss the importance of building a diverse home library, how to give your kids the language to discuss race, and how as parents we can create opportunities for our children to have more interracial experiences and relationships.
Mijha leaves us with beautiful encouragement to be honest with our children about our history and endlessly hopeful about the future.
