Friday 5! Aliens! ? (& How to Make Your Kids NOT Feel Like One!)

Each week during March, we’re covering one section of the 4 step process that parents can use to “Set Strong Limits & Stick to Them Successfully” Last week the first step was “Making Proactive Agreements” and this week we’re moving on to Empathy as our 2nd step.

So now that you’ve got two of the four steps, start practicing!

When you see a pattern in your parenting life (i.e.kids always push back when you leave a playdate) try to make a proactive agreement BEFORE you head out for the day. Then when the limit starts to get pushed, move immediately to start empathizing.

This week, we’re starting with step one: Proactive Agreements.

Making Proactive Agreements is so important because kids respond well when we incorporate them into our days together. It’s important to remember that agreements are different than just telling your kiddo what to do (because that would be a compliance statement!). Explaining the rule, teaching about it’s importance, asking them to repeat it & shaking or fist bumping are all aspects of making effective agreements.

Any simple statement where you seek to understand your kiddos will work…it doesn’t have to be fancy!

I feel ya girl…candy IS so yummy” or “I know baby, I love to stay up late too” will help your kids feel like they belong, like they aren’t aliens and that they don’t have to stick their feet in the mud so hard to feel important or powerful.
