from awkward to confident conversations through open & honest communication with our kids
One of the things that we as parents so commonly dread is “the talk..” You know the one..
And parents… I hear you…
Just the thought of talking to our kids about sex is daunting.
Sometimes I even find myself feeling a little (or a LOT) embarrassed talking about it and in the past, when I tried bringing up something around this topic, my kids (now 10 & 13) would say “ewwwww, gross mom, stop talking” lol!
Our culture has made this conversation out to be a terribly awkward, one-time conversation that we have to force out in an attempt to protect our kiddo s– but it doesn’t have to be this way!
Most of us recognize the importance of talking to our kids about sex (and everything in between!), but can’t seem to craft together the right words to say or the right time to say them.
It can feel like trying to teach your kiddos a foreign language that you haven’t learned yourself, you know?
So in order to help out our families, we brought in the experts — Kristin Dickerson and Dr. Shannon Deer. A beautiful pair of sisters who have made it their mission to remove the stigmas surrounding “the talk,” and to help provide parents with everything they need to make these conversations surrounding sex comfortable and casual.
Shannon and Kristin provide us with a great foundation of where to start with these conversations by asking ourselves..
- What are my values?
- What do I really want for my child?
- How am I going to get there?
Teaching your kids the values of your home and having continuous open conversation with them helps to equip them with the knowledge to make those difficult decisions as they face the world on their own.
We want to help you to prepare your kids so that they can navigate decisions on their own and just as importantly– to make sure they know that even when they do make a decision they are unhappy with that it will not ruin or break them. It is okay. Because we know that living a human life with the weight of shame can be so destructive.
Our goal with this episode is to encourage and empower you to have these ongoing conversations with your kiddos, which will strengthen your connection with them, and send them into the world with confidence as they face decisions throughout their days.
