Well, Hey there, I’m Stella. Welcome to my mom and dad’s podcast. The fresh start family show. We’re so happy you’re here. We’re inspired by the ocean Jesus and rock and roll and believe deeply in the true power of loving kindness together. We hope to inspire you to expand your heart, learn new tools and strengthen your family. Enjoy the show.

Wendy:
Well, Hey there, families and welcome to a new episode of the fresh start family show. I am your host, Wendy Snyder, positive parenting educator and family life coach. And you guys, can you believe it? It’s December? The holiday season is officially here. Christmas is just around the corner and I thought I’d record just kind of a lighthearted episode for you guys sharing some of my favorite gift recommendations, because I know that it can be a lot to get gifts for your kids and your spouse and all the things and your family and all the things in the holiday season. So I thought it would be fun for you to hear some of the things that I recommend and some of the ways that I really encourage parents to use Christmas gifts as a way to also combine, you know, some ways to teach your kids emotional literacy and use some of the strategies that we teach inside the foundations course and the bonfire support program and really any and all of our programs.

Wendy:
But depending on what you give your kids around the holidays, or even if it’s their birthday or something, you can really use those gifts to actually teach your kids behavioral things and redirections. So I am just going to go right into it. I hope you enjoy this and everything that I’m going to tell you about. We are going to document over on the Fresh Start Family show, episode page for this particular episode. So all the links will be over there and know that most of the links that I’m giving you, I have taken the time to reach out. And some, most of them, many of them, I was able to secure a discount for you. So when you go over to the page and you click on that special link, you’ll see that a lot of these do have a discount or free month available If it’s a subscription service that I’m telling you about.

Wendy:
So go ahead and use that link. Know that we also at here at Fresh Start Family, our affiliates for many of these programs or books or toys, or really anything that I recommend, I love to then reach out and see if I could support that company to become an affiliate. And then we put everything on our shop page that we love. So we have spent the last few years really curating our shop here at fresh start family to really provide resources for families, just like yours that are trying and wanting to implement positive parenting into the daily fabric of their lives. So without further ado, let’s get going.

Wendy:
Okay. So let’s talk about kids first, since I know they’re at the top of our list of, you know, great presence that we want to get. And really the first thing I recommend to parents is to try to do experience gifts, any where possible we all know toys can come and go books. And, and I mean, I love books. So you’ll hear me talk a lot about books in today’s episode, but you know, toys specifically, it can come and go. They love him one day and then the next week or month, they barely play with them. Now there are some exceptions, so there’s that role, but a lot of toys that’s what happens, right? But with experience gifts, it really, it doesn’t take up space in your home and it creates a memory and a connection building moment for you and your child.

Wendy:
So my favorite things to do with experience gifts are to actually combine them and have them be special. One-on-one dates POS if possible, wherever you can. So for example, we got Stella, who’s now 14. So my kids Stella’s 14 Terrin turns 11, but when Stella was younger, we, she always loved roller coaster ride. She loved amusement parks. So we would splurge and get a pass to Lego land. And we would wait until Christmas to give it to her. Even though I could have just gotten a Lego land pass at any time during the year, I always specifically would wait till it was time for Christmas to have that be her main gift.

Wendy:
And then her and I went on many, many special dates when she was little, we went on many dates with Terrin to my youngest. So it was all three of us, or sometimes once in a blue moon, daddy would come. But a lot of times I would take that gift of that, that season pass for her. And then we would go just on a special one-on-one date and grandma, who’s an angel, my husband’s mom. She would watch my little guy and those special one-on-one dates really go a long way. Families. I really want you to understand that when it comes to filling your kids up and, you know, filling up those needs buckets that I teach about inside of the foundations course that the need to belong, they need to feel powerful. They need to feel unconditionally loved.

Wendy:
They need to feel valuable. All those things that a lot of times, having one-on-one special focus time with a child. We’ll do that. Now. As Stella got older, that turned into different things. Now this last year, one of her biggest gifts was a season pass to Knott’s Berry farm, which is like a big time or rollercoaster park here in Southern California. But want you to get creative with this? What type of experience gift could you create? Do you have a local zoo that you love going to do you have a local museum that you would love to get your child a season pass to or special tickets to go see monster jam? If you have little boys that was Terrin actually was making his Christmas list last night.

Wendy:
And he asked again, Hey dad, could we maybe get monster jam tickets? Because him and daddy had been doing that now for almost five years consecutively. That was one of his Christmas gifts. And so that’s on Terrin’s list. Other ideas are, you can, you know, if you’re going to give, say your kids pretend ice cream for maybe they have a play kitchen when they’re young or pretend pizza. My kids, that was one of my favorite gifts to give my kids. They loved their mini kitchens when they were young. But if you’re going to give something like that, go ahead and turn it into giving them a coupon to have a special pizza date with mom or a special outing to go get ice cream or frozen yogurt one night without their brothers and sisters.

Wendy:
Right? So it just makes it kind of upset. It makes it extra special. But then if you combine that with the little play food or, you know, even you can really get creative with that, but you get where I’m going with the experience. Guests music is one of my other favorite experience gifts to give. If you have children that are into music at all, or if you’re into music, buy concert tickets like that is one of our biggest gifts. We usually give our children two years ago, their Christmas present almost their entire Christmas present. They didn’t get much that year was to go see Metallica, our favorite family band. We went, we took them to see Metallica in Ireland at a castle, and it was the best experience of our lives.

Wendy:
That family trip will go down in the record books as the most incredible family trip we have ever taken. And we’ve been some really cool places, but we also take our kids to see concerts here in San Diego. And we often will wrap those tickets up for their birthday or for Christmas. So for example, Terry has bought tickets to go see tool another one of our favorite bands. And that will be one of our kids Christmas gifts. And when we go and see those concerts together, we just, we just have a blast. So other ideas are, you could have coupons for special game nights where your, like, if you have kids that where one of them loves to be in charge of, you know, being like the banker in monopoly.

Wendy:
For example, if you have power kids that love to be in charge and your kids might fight over the banker position like mine have in the past, then you can give ’em, you know, you could give a gift of, they get to be the boss for the night or they get to be the banker, something like that. So just get creative with it. You guys, but experience gifts really are incredible. Okay. Let’s talk about one of my favorite new products that I recently kind of became friends with. The, the team that runs this company is a product called Tony box. Now Tony box is a little, it’s almost like an audible for kids and it’s a little box and it’s a very like childproof. So they get to control the box.

Wendy:
They get to control, you know, how it advances, and basically you program this little box to read books to your kids. So I was able to gift one to my neighbors and they have a one and a half year old and a 5, 4, 4 year old, one and a half and a four year old and both have, I recently watched these little ones. They came over when their mom and dad went out to dinner one night for his birthday, and I watched the little ones and they brought their Tony box. And it was so cute to see the one and a half year old control, the Toni box control, the storytelling control the music. And you guys know me if there’s any place that you can provide a toy, that your child is able to have full rights and control over and feel empowered to program it and use it, you know, play whatever he wants to play on there.

Wendy:
It’s just something that really feeds up our kids. Any chance you can have to get in to help them feel powerful, really helps. So I love toady boxes and even my Terrin, who’s now 11. He listens to his Tony box all the time. So he has nature sounds that he listens to when he goes to bed at night. And he also has like white noise that he listens to it. Cause sometimes it’s hard for him to fall asleep. And then he has like how to train your dragon story. He has despicable me and he also has diary of a wimpy kid and he still loves it. And he’s 11. So this really is one of my favorite recommendations for parents. If you’re looking for a really great quality gift.

Wendy:
Okay. Another idea for kids is an indoor ping pong set that you can put on your kitchen table. Now, if you’re anything like me, we don’t have space for a ping pong table, plus they’re expensive, but these little ping-pong sets you can get for 20 or 30 bucks on Amazon. We have one linked on our, on our show notes page, I’m sorry, in our shop page that we have linked in the show notes page, but this is been something that Terrin and I use to spend a lot of quality time together. So it can be quick, right? It can just be 10 minutes, but it’s still something that we can take a break from whatever we’re doing, whether it’s cooking dinner or me on my computer, if he’s home in the afternoon or whatever it may be and just connect for 10 minutes.

Wendy:
And we always are laughing and giggling and having a blast. So that’s a really good one for, you know, just playing, playing with your kids and giving them something that you can do with them, or they can do with their siblings. Speaking of Terrin and what I’ve been doing lately to have quality time with him that I think makes a great gift, especially for young boys is a football, but it’s a special football that I have linked on the shop page that is soft and it has a playbook on it. So a playbook meeting, like all these different plays that you could do, if you are like playing with the neighborhood on a Saturday morning or having a family fun little football match, we like Terrin begs me to play real football, not real football, but flag football.

Wendy:
He like really, really, really wants to play. But I was very not sure about if I wanted to let him play football because of just the head injuries that come with that sport later, if you were to fall in love with that sport and want to play in college or whatever, that’s kind of where my mind goes with it. So I have said no to the organized football so far, but I’m a big fan of getting the neighborhood together or getting friends and their parents together and just having a neighborhood, you know, Saturday morning game. So this football that I recommend makes it easy for us girls to play too. Now there might be some girls that are really tough and their hands don’t get hurt by regular footballs, but mine do so this football allows Terrin and I to go out in the front yard, we throw that we can throw the football for 10, 20, 30 minutes and it just feels nice.

Wendy:
And it’s when I catch it, it doesn’t jam my fingers or hurt my nails. It’s also easy on kids. We just had our little cousin in town. Who’s six or actually no he’s seven now. And when with his normal football, he, every time he would catch it, he would say, ouch. But when we use this football, when we brought ours over, he, you could tell it was just a different experience for him. So this is something moms that I want you to understand. This is throwing the football to your son back and forth is not just for dads. This can be something that opens up conversation between you and your son. And of course your daughters, two daughters could play football, but a lot of times it’s our sons that want to play it.

Wendy:
But a lot of students, you know, I tell them that if, if you have something you want to talk to your child about, or if you want to have a great relationship with your kid, you’ve got to do some, some, some time with them where you’re building their relationship. And then that opens up to one day when you’re throwing the football back and forth, you can actually use that opportunity to talk about something. If you’ve noticed that they were quiet that afternoon, when they came home from school, or you got an email about something that happened in the classroom or whatever it is, I always recommend for my students to avoid the whole. We need to sit down and talk. It actually will go a lot better for you when you need to talk to your kid, talk to them in air quotes.

Wendy:
If you are in a rocking chair, or if you’re playing with Legos, or if you’re throwing the football back and forth, it’s just much easier to have those types of conversations. Okay. It’s contest time, $250 cash is up for grabs. Do I have your intention? As a way to celebrate Christmas I want to give back to you guys for all your support this year. We appreciate you so much. And this podcast, the fresh start family show would not be possible without you. So here’s our way of saying thank you. You can use this money for yourself, a family member groceries to bless someone in need or whatever way is helpful to you this holiday season. And don’t worry, I’ve documented all of these contest rules over on the show notes page for today’s episode.

Wendy:
Good luck, happy holidays, and Merry, Merry Christmas. I cannot wait to see who wins. Okay. Another one of my favorite gifts for kids is I know they’re everywhere and they’re annoying kind of because they’re everywhere. They definitely feel like a big fad, but those little popit toys you guys I think are great for kids. I think they’re great to put in their backpacks and you’ll see what I mean. When you go to the shop, the fresh start family show notes page, and the shop page. You’ll see that these are the little devices that are they’re made out of plastic. I do hate plastic.

Wendy:
I wish they weren’t made out of plastic, but they’re made out of plastic and they just don’t like, they’re like almost like popping paper, you know, like wrapping paper that you would wrap something fraudulent and it’s that same kind of sensation for kids. And I think these are really great for when kids are bored or they’re in class because they’re silent usually. Or if they’re trying to like sit still in church maybe or whatever it may be. I just really think that these little fidget toys are super cool. And they’re really, really expensive. I mean, really, really inexpensive expensive. They’re not really expensive. They’re like the cheapest things on the planet. But I do think I’ve seen a lot of kids that love these.

Wendy:
And I’ve seen my own little guy use these, especially like if we’re in the car on a road trip, sometimes he can get so darn fidgety and I’m like, Terrin, stop, like stop, you know, like whatever, tapping your finger on the thing, or I don’t know. You guys know sometimes being in cars with kids can get really crazy, but these little fidget toys can help. Okay. Another great gift idea is the Troomi phone. Now I love this device because you guys know how passionate I am about keeping I-phones out of kids’ hands for as long as possible. If you haven’t heard me talk about that.

Wendy:
Our episode, episode 1 0 6 with bill Brady from Troomi is a really good one where I talk all about our experience with setting firm limits around technology and phones. And I just give more about our experience and why I’m so passionate about it, but the Troomi phone. I really like parents because it is a kid safe phone. So you control all the apps and there’s really, there’s not a, they can’t easily add apps or breakthrough the system. Like it’s just, it’s very easy for the parent to control it, but it’s a device that grows with your kid. So that’s what I’ve really liked about these devices. And so my kids are both using Troomi devices. Now they are non iPhone type phones, so they are non smartphone phones, but they have the capability to add apps like apple music, Google classroom, national geographic, those type of things to the device.

Wendy:
So they’re mostly only text and voice, but as your kids get older, because that is important with technology that instead of just sheltering them forever and then handing them an iPhone, as soon as they go to high school or college or whatever. I think for me, I advocate wait till eight, if you can. There’s a pledge called wait until eighth. And that’s what we did with our kids. And so when Stella goes to high school, if she chooses to save up her money and get an iPhone, then she will have our blessing at that time. But until then, it is very important for me, for them to have non iPhone phones out in the world. But the point is Troomi I really like their phones because you can graduate a child up, up, up to allow them to have access to more and more apps.

Wendy:
And maybe even the internet at some point as they get a little bit older. So definitely check out Troomi. They’re incredible. Okay. Let me take a moment to tell you about some of my favorite books for kids that are really great. Number one is a book called well, there’s a few different books in this series and one is called. Teeth are not for biting. And another one is called hands are not for hitting. Now. I love these books because when it comes to compassionate, discipline reading, well using play at all and reading and literature is often a form of play with kids, but reading to your children to educate them and teach them life skills is a fantastic way to work with them.

Wendy:
So teeth are not for biting and hands are not for hitting are two of my favorite. You can check those out over on the shop page. And then also there’s a book called you are special. It’s by max Lucado. And this is one of my favorite books. And addition to a book called the little soul in the sun. Now these are books that they’re a little bit longer, and they’re a little bit more of like, you know, a fantasy type of, so it’s going to be a longer read. This would be for older kids, whereas teeth are not for biting and hands are not for hitting or for younger kids, but the, you are special and the little soul and the sun, you know, they’re for older kids and they’re for us. So by older kids, I mean anywhere from like maybe five to age 10, and you are special is a book about a little wooden guy.

Wendy:
Let’s call him who is in a village. And he thinks that to be valued and appreciated and to feel like he’s good enough, there’s this whole community that gives out dots when you’re good. So if you jump high or if you are really smart, or if you say the right thing, or if you have lots of friends, you get adopt, and if you do something bad or you make a mistake, you don’t get any dots. And the dots that you had fall off. So what happens is this little character ends up kind of meeting his maker, so to speak, which kind of is like God in disguise.

Wendy:
But he meets his maker who fills him with the assurance that his journey in life, his purpose is not about what other people think of him, but about what he thinks of himself and what his maker thinks about him. That’s all that matters. And basically this little character learns that in order to really feel like he’s thriving in life and he’s able to have self-confidence and not care about what other people think. It’s just a journey that is just a beautiful, beautiful story. So I really encourage you guys to get that book. It is a, that will be treasured in your home library for a long, long time. And in my experience, we read this over and over to my kids, little soul in the sun is another one of those books.

Wendy:
That’s really good for us in addition to our children. So it is a story about how there’s this little soul and he, you know, wants to do good in the world. He wants to do all these wonderful things. And again, kind of his maker, God tells him, well, you know, in order to be the light, that’s really what he wants to do is he wants to be the light. He says, in order to be the light, you actually have to experience the darkness. So you can see what the light really is, right? So he has him come down to earth and actually be someone who makes mistakes so he can experience and provide a way for other people to forgive.

Wendy:
He can be the person who provides the opportunity for someone to learn how to give compassion, or learn how to be patient. And I just love this book because it reminds us parents and it teaches our children that, you know, people who make mistakes or people who wrong us or people, sometimes it’s our children, honestly, right? Who bug us or annoy us or irritated, or who feel like they’re pushing our buttons. A lot of times it’s a beautiful opportunity for us to practice skill sets, practice, developing traits, like patience and compassion and forgiveness and empathy and kindness and unconditional love all those things. Right?

Wendy:
And we would not be able to develop those things if it wasn’t for people who tested our patient, if patients, if it wasn’t for people or children who caused, you know, did things that needed us to forgive them or show grace or compassion, does that make sense? So I just really, really love that book. And I recommend everybody adds it to their library too. Okay. Next step is for families who, well, this is really for any family. This is a great gift. I know that kids love this gift. I’ve had students give this to their kids before, but my friend Marlene runs an organization and has a product called reward them visual schedule stickers.

Wendy:
And this is so good to teach kids and empower kids to do their chores or to follow through with their nighttime routine or to get all their, their things ready in order to be ready for school on time. It’s just a wonderful way. When you put a visual in front of kids, in addition to just telling them, like, not only in addition, instead of just telling your kids what you want them to do, get up, brush your teeth, get in the car, put on your shoes, clean your room, you know, wiped down the counters, all the things. If they have a visual chart that you can just say, Hey, did you do your chart or, Hey, I need your help.

Wendy:
Everybody in the family needs to get their charts done. And then we can come together to watch our family show at night or whatever it is your kids will cooperate better. So I really love what Marlene’s doing with her, a small shop for small business reward AUMs. And I want you guys to go check them out. Okay. Here’s another idea for you. I know a lot of you are having family meals where you’re wondering how the heck you’re going to get your two or three or four year old to actually sit still at the dinner table. I was just with our dear friends who have really little kids at Thanksgiving, and it’s a challenge, right? It is a challenge to actually sit and eat meals. I have so many stories back.

Wendy:
Some of my worst parenting moments was when I tried to get Stella to sit still at the dinner table. And it was just a nightmare. But I always say to parents do not buy into the myth that you cannot have toys at the dinner table. It is such a classic kind of, I don’t know, weird BS thing that children need to learn, how to sit perfectly still at the age of 2, 3, 4 year old, four years old and eat their meals, right? It’s just not the way it works. A lot of times in the past, the reason why kids did that is because they were scared to death, that they were going to get hurt or spanked or punished if they got up from the dinner table or if they didn’t eat their vegetables. So let’s do it different nowadays.

Wendy:
We are doing it differently nowadays. So there is these little drawing tablets that come with water. So you fill them up. So it’s a little paintbrush, but it’s not markers. It’s not crayons. It’s not paint. It’s just water. They’re called water Wells. And they’re made by Melissa and Doug. And I highly recommend you grab a ton of these and put them in your kids’ stockings and wrap them up under the Christmas tree, because they are fantastic to pull out for family meals, for car rides, for bus rides, wherever you need to have a little pocket of peace. I really, really recommend those.

Wendy:
Okay. Here’s another one. Sand timers for kids are amazing. These are good. When you want to give your kids the option, you guys know if you’ve ever done my from unkind parenting blueprint program, we really advocate for choices with children when it’s time to set a limit and follow through. So one of the easiest examples is, do you want to like clean up your Legos now? Or do you want to play for five more minutes and then clean up your Legos? Do you want to brush your teeth now? Or do you want to brush your teeth in two minutes? Right? You’re still gonna brush your teeth kid. You’re still going to clean up your Legos, but I’m empowering you with some actual choice. So you feel like you have some say in your life, but most kids when they’re really young, can’t tell time yet.

Wendy:
So if they can be in charge of a sand timer that they cause they’re always going to charge, they’re always going to choose five more minutes, right? Or two more minutes, whatever it may be, if they can pull out their sand timer and these come in packs where you can get two minutes, five minutes, 10 minutes, and then they’re in charge of flipping them over then that can really help to get kids to cooperate when it’s time to actually follow through. Okay. So I love sand timers for kids. They’re also just really good, you know, for visual kids who, you know, like to see something instead of just having it be some, okay, five more minutes, and really this works great to replace the classic threats parents.

Wendy:
So most of the time when you’re at the park, you hear parents give the five minute warning and I’m just not an advocate for warnings. Warnings are just a glorified version of threats. I’d rather you just give a choice and be a little proactive. So when it’s, when you have five minutes to go, or when it’s, you know, 10 minutes before you have to leave for school to be at a school or church on time, give your child a choice. Do you want to get in the car now or do you, would you like to play for 10 more minutes and then get in the car? I promise you you’re going to have a lot more success. Okay. And then two more books. And really there are so many books over on the shop page. I want you guys to go check out, but I’m just going to highlight two more calm downtime, which is one of my favorite books.

Wendy:
When you are trying to teach your children self-regulation and get away from the external controls. So if you are one of the thousands and thousands of families who are trying to change up from time-outs, which again are externally controlled, more forced, really their version of punishment, more than compassionate discipline. If you’re trying to switch from time-outs into calming breaks, then this book can really help you to teach your children that you know, why, why they want to embrace calming breaks and how you are switching it up and moving away from time-outs. Because what I’ve read I run into is a lot of families have difficulty when they switch from timeouts to calming breaks and they asked me, well, what if my child won’t go?

Wendy:
What if they refuse to go? And a lot of times it’s just because they’ve been conditioned to think that being alone is associated with a timeout, which is a punishment, which is painful and means they did something wrong and they’re in trouble. So calm downtime book is a great way to show your kids calming down, calm down, time. Being alone, being by yourself is a fantastic way to take care of yourself. It’s not a punishment. There’s nothing to be scared of, but it’s a good thing. It’s a good thing. That’s kind of the first step is when you’re trying to teach your kids self-regulation is teaching them to calm down on their own and get away from making them calm down. So calm down time is one of my favorite books.

Wendy:
And then the last one I’m going to highlight today is a book called you can do it again. It’s on the shop page. And this is a great one. If you have kids that fall into inadequacy misbehavior, or I don’t even like to call it inadequacy misbehavior, I like to call it inadequacy behavior in the foundations course, I teach you about the four categories of misbehavior and inadequacy behavior is your child just feels like they can’t do it. And they kind of fall into a victim mindset, meaning that I’m not good enough. I can’t do this on my own. You have to do it for me. I’m in capable. I can’t speak up for myself. I can’t, there’s just all of that, right?

Wendy:
Like I can’t go to the sports practice. I can’t be in this new group. I can’t go to the church nursery by myself. Like I need you to do it for me. And that’s just a downward spiral. Right? A lot of times we’ll come in and rescue our kids, which I help families get away from that pattern because it actually just kind of perpetuates inadequacy behavior. Whereas if you can come in with like a strong, just empowerment and support vibe instead of a okay, move over, I’ll do it for you. Like it just works a lot better. So this book by Betsy Lewin called you can do it. It’s just a simple book about these little alligators as alligator Calla character, but it works through his mindset and his negative self-talk and his thoughts that kind of come into his head that happens for every kid and every human being that goes through an inadequacy period.

Wendy:
Right. And it just really is cool how in the end, this character understands and realizes that he can do it and he ends up doing it. So it’s just, again, another way to teach your children how to do things in small steps, how to feel empowered, how to believe in themselves and to do it through literature. Okay. Since we are on the subject of books, I’m going to tell you just a few books that I recommend for parents to. And I’m really it’s these, these two kind of go hand in hand, but this is a great gift for yourself or your spouse and also for your kids. And this is all of Bob Goff’s books, but we have a few on our website.

Wendy:
Love does is an adult book. Everybody always is an adult book. And then love does for kids is the kids’ version. So I think this would be a really cool three-pack right? If you got your husband, everybody always, if you got yourself, love does. And then you got, your kids. Love does for kids. I cannot speak highly enough of Bob Goff’s work. I will, I will read everybody always over and over and over again. And essentially it’s just about the power of being the hands and feet of Jesus and really living our life in a way where we represent his love to every human being on the planet.

Wendy:
No matter what, I’ll never forget. I was reading everybody always so funny. It just makes me emotional. I’m such a beautiful, emotional being, but I was reading everybody, always in Terry and I were toggling between it because he was reading at the same time I was and he finished it and he handed it to me on an airplane. And he and I, he knew I had the last chapter to go and he was like crying and he handed it to me and I’ll never forget flipping through this. Just like, oh my gosh, the, this book, the excitement that happens in this book, especially the last chapter, I ended it, tears were just streaming down my face. And I was like, oh my gosh, Jerry, this is my favorite book I’ve ever read in my entire life.

Wendy:
So I don’t say that lightly. I love Bob golf. I think his books around Christmas time are just the perfect gift. And I just, I love, love, love. Everybody always loved us and loved us for kids. Love does for kids. He takes his storytelling, which is just amazing. He’s the best storyteller on the planet. And he’s hilarious. And he breaks it down into bite size stories for kids. And so that book would be appropriate for maybe ages kids ages like four to 10 is what I would recommend for that. Maybe five to 10. Okay. And then also regarding books for yourself, cause I’m going to sprinkle in some self-care gifts here as we go to the present over perfect book is one of my, another one of my favorite books is by Shauna Niequist.

Wendy:
And it is a fantastic book to start off your new year, if you want to put it into your stocking, because she just fills you with the most beautiful, eloquent writing about how to find peace, where you are, how to find calm, kind of in the craziness of life. She, her story is that she was like just kind of killing herself in her career. And she slowly pulled back and was able to find the ability to be present with her children and her family and her life. And it’s just a beautiful, beautiful book. It’s one of my favorites and I will probably be re rereading it in the new year. Okay. One more thing.

Wendy:
Well, w one more category for kids that I want to touch on before I move on to gifts for your spouse is anytime you can bring in play or visual things for your children is again, going to be a great opportunity for you to teach. So two things that I highly recommend are a breathe ball and also any type of little character thing, eating, EAs, just call them that, that you can use to teach or role-play, or do redos with your children. So let’s talk about the breeds ball for a second. This is a, a toy that I’m cracking up lately because we’ve been watching the office as a family. And again, my kids are older now they’re 11 and 14, and it is so much fun to watch the office together at night.

Wendy:
It is like the best reward to get to the point and our parenthood journey where we can actually watch these shows together. And our kids are old enough and it’s just awesome. But Michael Scott, the main character of that show, who is the funniest character on the planet, he has a breathed ball on his desk. And so we laugh every time we see it, but our breathed ball is just, it’s got all these hinges inside of it. So it’s small enough to kind of hold in your hand and then when you expand it, it gets really big. So this is a great tool and toy to gift your children and then use when you’re trying to teach them how to do breathing or, or self calming through breath, or to take a deep breath before they react to their sibling or to go to their bedroom and take a few deep breaths.

Wendy:
When they’re feeling like they’re like fire is coming out of their head and they’re angry, or they feel hurt, or they’re tempted to talk back or close their eye or roll their eyes at you, teaching them by showing them what a breath looks like and teaching them about how, when oxygen comes into your body, oftentimes it will regulate your nervous system. And oftentimes we only need, you know, I forget the stat, but it’s like, you know, something like within 13 seconds or something, if you can just pause for 13 seconds, you are so much more likely to be able to actually respond with integrity than you would be if you just reacted right away. So to be able to teach your kids, that is just beautiful through a toy, remember learning through play is just always, always a great idea.

Wendy:
We do. I have an episode with my dear friend at that is the director over at the children’s museum here in San Diego. And we did an episode about how effective it is to discipline and teach kids through play. And I’ll make sure I link that in the show notes, because that was a really fun little 20, 25 minute discussion. That if you want to learn more about how you can teach your kids through play, that’s a great one to listen to. Okay. And then the other thing that we have on our shop page that I think is a great thing to use, to teach kids is our, is the egg. They’re called expressions, but they’re these little wooden tools. And they come with a book and each one of them has a face on them.

Wendy:
And this is where you can teach kids about emotions. So a teaching, emotional literacy and wellness parents is one of the best gifts you can give your children. And it does take time and effort and it does take practice and it does take patience. And a lot of times our kids are learning emotional literacy alongside of us. Most of us were never taught how to feel hurt and how to feel scared, how to feel angry, how to feel sad. We were only told you’re, it’s fine. Be happy, be happy, be happy. That was like, the definition of a good life was if you were happy. But unfortunately the wholeness of life is about all the emotions.

Wendy:
All emotions are good, but most of us grew up in homes, right? Where it was like, get up. You’re fine. You’re not bleeding. You’re not hurt. If you were sad, it was like, don’t be sad. Don’t be sad. Like here’s some candy, don’t be sad. If you were angry, it was like, don’t, you dare be angry with me. And if you were scared, it was like, there’s nothing to be scared of. There’ll be silly. Right? So oftentimes when we teach our kids emotional literacy, which does wonders for their behavior, which does wonders for their relationships, we are, we get to learn it besides them beside them. So if you haven’t heard my episode that I, that Terry and I recorded on how our kids are often our greatest teachers I’ll make sure I link that in the show notes page, but it’s one of the favorite, my favorite episodes we’ve ever recorded because it’s just so darn accurate.

Wendy:
And a lot of times we really are learning beside our children’s. So those expressions, little wooden tools, each one of those little characters comes with a different facial expression. So you can start to open up the discussion and teach your children. This is what angry feels like. And it’s not a forbidden bad emotion. This is what sad feels like. Sad means that is that as an emotion that shows how much you care, this is what scared looks like and feels like, and it’s completely normal and healthy to feel scared. And on the other side of scared is bravery and courage, right? Like there’s just so many beautiful aspects to every single emotion and those little expression toys are a great way.

Wendy:
Okay. Last thing for kids. And then I’m gonna move on for our spouses. So butterfly gardens are something I really recommend, and you can get them any time of the year. You guys, which I think is so cool. So butterfly gardens are a little kit that you can purchase that you, it comes with a big net essentially. And then you can purchase the larvae, the little worms, the butterfly worms, the caterpillars, and they, your kids get to watch them turn into caterpillars. And it is the most magical thing on the planet. And what’s cool is that you can use this visual representation of what a butterfly goes through to get, to become a butterfly.

Wendy:
You can use this to teach your children, that whatever they are learning and they’re growing and they’re developing as far as skillsets and life skills, it is a journey and they can believe in themselves. And sometimes it’s difficult. Like when that caterpillar is in that cocoon and he’s like bouncing around and he’s trying to like build his wings and break out of that, it can feel hard and moments, but you know, it’s just a great way to show them, look, this caterpillar went through a lot to get to this beautiful butterfly. And so can you keep working at it? You’re learning how to keep your hands to yourself. When you’re angry at your sister, you’re learning how to stay quiet in class. When you’re tempted to call out the answer, you’re learning how to walk away.

Wendy:
When you feel mad that mommy won’t let you watch your show anymore, whatever it is, you’re learning, I’m learning, we’re all learning. We’re going to make mistakes. This is a journey. And on the other, end of all, the things we’re learning is this fantastic, amazing result, which is really what we all are turning into, right? Is we’re human beings. We’re always learning and growing. I believe if you’re doing it right as a human being. So showing kids that through the butterfly gardens is really, really special. Well, Hey there, families, I want to talk to you about what my friends at Troomi wireless are up to this month.

Wendy:
Through December 12th. When you use the code FreshStart, you can save 50% on a Troomi kid, safe phone. After that, after December 12th, you’ll get $50 off when you use our code FreshStart. Plus, if you had to troomi.com, you’ll see that they are doing lots of fun contests this month, where they’re giving away some really cool prizes, such as a Peloton bike. You guys know how much I love our Peloton bike. That’s a good prize. They’re also giving away a year of free service, as well as target and Amazon gift cards. Now, I can’t tell you how excited I am to now officially be partnering with Troomi because I am just so dang passionate about keeping iPhones out of kids’ hands for as long as possible, because I have seen firsthand just how fruitful this strong limit is for kids and families.

Wendy:
Both of my kids are now rocking Troomi phones instead of iPhones out in the world. And it gives me the ability to call them when they are at a friend’s house. And I want to say goodnight, maybe if they’re at a sleepover and I love you, or if I’m late to pick them up from volleyball or skateboarding, and it helps me to feel like they are safe. If they’re riding their bike to school and worded need me at any time. For example, the day my son broke his wrist a few months ago, he was able to call me from the skate park immediately to come get him. And that felt really good. But with Troomi phones, parents, kids are kept safe from the dangers of untethered access to the internet, social apps and online gaming plus all the other stuff that comes along with regular smartphones.

Wendy:
And trust me, parents, there are many the addiction. So many kids have two iPhones and the awful stuff. So many get exposed to from such a young age is something we can all help to prevent. If we all can just find the courage to be different and go the Troomi route. Plus the coolest thing my kids love about having a Troomi phone is that these devices have advanced capabilities that are a lot of that. A lot of their more simpler devices that we tried in the past didn’t. So for example, my daughter, who is super into her music, we were able, when we went into the parent portal to set up her phone, which is super easy to navigate, by the way parents, I get a little freaked out by technology.

Wendy:
Sometimes when it comes to setting up these kinds of devices and the Troomi parent portal could not be easier to navigate, but I was able to add apple music for her to listen to whenever she wants, plus Google classroom, which she uses at school. So I really do love what Troomi is doing. I love their whole brand. I love the team over there, and I’m just really excited to help you learn more about this incredible company. And they’re really cool quince phones. So head to Troomi.com and enter the code FreshStart at checkout to get this incredible deal. Trust me, parents, this will be one of those stocking stuffers or Christmas gifts that you’ll be so happy you invested in, okay.

Wendy:
Back to the show. Okay. Let’s talk grandparents for a second because I have a really great gift recommendation for grandparents. Meaning your parents. I gave Terry and I gave my mom and dad and Terry’s mom and dad, and step-mom everybody got a story worth book last year. And guys, these are incredible. So if you’ve never heard, heard of StoryWorth before they are actually us, us kind of a subscription service that you gift, let’s say your parents, I’m suggesting your parents out to, we give it to, and for once or one whole year, your parents will get an email every single week that says the, ask them a question.

Wendy:
And it basically compiles all of their answers over one year. And then you get to print a book and give that to them. So it ends up creating a book, telling the story of their life, but it gives it to them in bite size pieces each week. So example, they’ll get an email that says, tell us about your childhood. Like where did you grow up or tell us about your dad when you were young or what is the most important life lesson you’ve ever learned or tell us, you know, about the birth of each of your children, or there’s just a million questions that it, it can ask automatically, or you can program your own questions. So we’ve actually used these as gifts for Christmas.

Wendy:
We’ve used them as birthday gifts, and we’ve also used them as anniversary gifts and just created our own questions for our family members. But I just really, really love story worth. I think it’s a wonderful present for family and I want you to go check them out. And of course we have a discount code on the shop page for you. Okay. Let’s talk about gifts for spouses. So my favorite gift for a spouse, and I’m just gonna put it out there, you guys, because I want you to hear me talk about it. It might be out of your budget and that’s fine, but the Peloton bike, you guys has been the most incredible thing we have added to our family. And I decided to take on this cost, you know, Terry and I basically like I have some fun money I get to spend.

Wendy:
He has some fun money he gets to spend, but for me, I decided I wish I would have done it as a Christmas present. That would have been a great idea, but I couldn’t wait. So I did it back in the summertime, but I bought this for our family and I ended up doing monthly payments, which to me ended up, you know, I, because it was COVID two. I decided not to do the gym thing anymore. And I got us this special bike to have in our house. And let me tell you, it has been a hit. Terry loves this bike so much. And so this is why I’m giving you this gift. I gift idea for your spouse because you can finance. These bikes are like two or $3,000, but once you finance them, they come out to be like 60 bucks a month.

Wendy:
They probably are even less. Now, actually I’ve heard that the price came down a little bit on the base model and it comes out to be like 50 or $60 a month, which I think is doable compared to like your local gym membership maybe or whatever, private trainers or whatever. But Terry loves this bike. I love this bike. And it’s just been so good for both of us to actually be able to get in our physical exercise and do it in 20 or 30 minutes and be done. Now, a lot of people think, oh, I don’t like spin classes and I didn’t love them either guys before I tried this Peloton bike. But the coaches that teach inside this program are so motivating and they make it so fun.

Wendy:
And the music is so fun. All the things that I just found it, I find it to be like one of my favorite things that I, I almost do a Peloton every single day. Terry pretty much does a Peloton. Every single day. He’s found a girl that teaches heavy metal classes and he’s so excited, but no matter what kind of music your, your husband is into, they have like every genre imaginable, they have every type of instructor. And I just really, really love this Peloton bike. So we have a link on the shop page for you to get a little discount if you want to invest in one. And I just really think a lot of your spouses would dig it. Okay. Second gift idea for your spouse is an experience gift.

Wendy:
And that is drum roll and overnight trip to a hotel families, parents, mothers mama’s listened to me. I don’t care how nice it is. Your husbands will be so stoked to get an overnight escape with you. And this is something Terry and I do often. And I’m, you know, a lot of times all give it as a birthday, a birthday present, or a holiday gift because it takes, we all know it takes a lot of effort to create these nights, right? You have to, you have to do the, you have to book the babysitter. You have to get the dogs cared for the cats, cared for, you have to of course, book the hotel room.

Wendy:
You have to make dinner reservations. But the biggest part is getting the kids cared for. I know a lot of you are like, oh my gosh, I could never sneak away, but I’m here to tell you that you can, when my kids were young, it was a really, it was tough. I remember there were so many nights where I would leave or we would leave to go out on a date night or overnight date night and Terry and my little guy would literally be chasing us down the street, screaming, crying, and just, it was awful to pull away, right? Like he had the worst separation anxiety between the ages of four and seven. It was a long time. He had just such despair when we would. And so I get it. I know it takes a lot of work, but I’m telling you when it comes to gifts, your spouse will appreciate it so much to have uninterrupted special time with you in a hotel that is away from the laundry away from the worries of the kids away from the animals.

Wendy:
I just think it’s the most special gift you can give your husband. I usually get creative and do mine on credit card points. So it usually doesn’t cost me much. And it’s just been some of our most special memories is when Terry and I get that special time together. So trust me, your husbands will be stoked. So I want you to consider that experience, gift this holiday season. Okay. Another Gift Ideas idea for your spouse is my favorite Bible. If you have a husband who loves Jesus, the life application study Bible study Bible is one of my favorite favorite Bibles. It’s the one I use it’s I got one for Terry last Christmas, but the special thing about this Bible is it has translation down below almost for every single verse and it breaks it down into the most layman’s terms, easy to understand real life modern day application of what that scripture means.

Wendy:
And this Bible has just been life-changing for me, family. So I really think this is a great gift for your husband. Like I said, if you have a husband of faith who loves Jesus, second idea for your spouse is, and this is for yourself too, is a pair of apple AirPods pro you guys. Oh my gosh. I, sometimes I lose my AirPods and I think I start to freak out because I’m like AirPods. I love them so much. Air pods have, are what enabled me to learn and grow through many, many courses. I invest in so many courses, mostly for my business these days, but I’ve also done personal development coursework.

Wendy:
You know, that I’ve invested in that. I use my AirPods for it, but my point is, if you want to listen to books, listen to podcasts, do online courses, any, or all of the above AirPods are just a fantastic way to do that and getting a pair for your spouse or getting a pair for yourself is really, I think a great gift. I can introduce your spouse to being able to listen on the go. Especially if you have been wanting your husband to learn and be open to learning fresh start family, you know, positive parenting techniques and strategies that we teach inside of our courses, or even just listening to our podcasts.

Wendy:
This is a great way to encourage and invite him into doing that. Cause he can pop them in. He can listen on his job. He can listen while he’s mowing the lawn and telling you they are, they are so tight. The sound on them that sometimes I will listen to them while I’m blow drying with listen with them, why I’m blow, drying my hair. And they’re just amazing. And then nowadays there’s so many podcasts and audible books that are just really good for men. So apple AirPods pro we have a link on the shop page. They’re one of another one of my favorite gifts. Okay. Switching gears for a second. I want to give you some ideas for self care gifts, because remember when it comes to the holidays, giving yourself some gifts, especially that you can pop into your stocking, right, is not selfish.

Wendy:
It’s actually incredibly wise because you know that saying happy wife equals a happy life. Trust me, your husband and your kids want you to take care of yourself. So there’s a few gifts that I would love to recommend you check out. The first one is my friend, Robin, who runs the balanced life online programs. She has an incredible membership that makes taking care of yourself. I think fun. And she just brings in a beautiful message of grace over guilt and her Pilates program. The exercises she teaches is mat Pilates. And you can do it from your living room.

Wendy:
It’s super easy. And her program is incredibly affordable. So this would make a great gift for yourself. You could join her program, print out a little certificate and then drop it into your stocking. And then on Christmas morning, when you open it, let your kids know that this was a gift you gave yourself that will help you to take care of yourself and fill up your own bucket. So you’re more patient with them. So you’re more likely to be kind and loving and all the things. And that’s actually an incredible opportunity to teach your children that it’s important to take care of yourself, that taking care of yourself is not selfish, but it actually makes you a better human. When you get enough rest. When you get enough nutrition, when you get enough exercise and you take care of your body and mind it is smart start practice.

Wendy:
So you’ll see over on the show notes page and our shop page that we have a coupon code for you that actually gives you $20 off your first month membership. And her programs are amazing because there’s no commitment. So you could pop in there and try it for a month. And if you don’t dig it, you can just cancel right away and you’ll never be charged again. But we have a coupon code that will give you $20 off your first month. So you can try her programs for just $7. So make sure you check out the balance life as a possible gift for yourself. Secondly, this episode would not be complete if I don’t share with you some ways you can take care of yourself in the way in the, you know, realm of parenting because your husband remember is going to benefit so greatly when you have more peace and more calm when you work with the kids.

Wendy:
So if you are in a season where you’re just like, oh my gosh, I lose my temper a lot, or I don’t know what to do when the kids push back or I don’t know quite how to comfortable setting strong limits and sticking to them with consistency. So I get stressed out. My husband sees me like this a lot, and it probably is something that kind of wears you both down a little bit. So by you investing in yourself this holiday season and grabbing either the foundations course or one of our lesson bundles, or even the, firm and kind parenting blueprint, all of those are clearly, you know, you can check them out over the shop page, but it is wise and it would be absolutely just such a wonderful gift for yourself this holiday season.

Wendy:
And to make this self care gift even sweeter, I have decided to include a free private session. That’s a one-on-one session with me. That’s a retail value of $495. You guys to anyone who invest in the foundations course this month and just shoots me an email to let me know that you would like to grab this special Christmas bonus. So again, anybody who invest in the foundations course during the month of December, just shoot me an email and I will get you a Christmas bonus of a free one hour private session with me, which is a $495 value.

Wendy:
Okay? One more category that I forgot to tell you when it comes to kids and that is subscription boxes. So I’m going to end it with this two of my favorite subscription. I’m going to tell you three, actually one, my subscription services for kids that make the greatest gifts are number one, Kiwi company. They have craft kits, they have science kits. They have art kits, but my little boy has a subscription. I call him my little boy. He’s 11 now, right? But you still a little to me, he gets a subscription. He gets a new box every single month. It also comes with a book. You can upgrade to have it come with a book and he loves it. You guys loves it. Whether it’s a science experiment or an art project, or he builds something, he just loves his Kiwi box.

Wendy:
So definitely consider that as, as a subscription gift for your child. Another one is a book subscription service with my friends over at Jambo books. Now jambo books is the sweetest. We had her on our podcast. I’ll make sure we link it in the show notes page. But this book subscription allows you to build your book library and your home to be culturally diverse, to make sure that you are exposing your children to books and stories and literature with characters of color. So it’s really important. And I just love the books that she curated in the jambo book sets.

Wendy:
And you can kind of choose from which age group your kids are, last subscription service I have to recommend. And then I’m going to wrap this episode. But the last subscription service is bravery magazine. I love bravery magazine and really no matter what you subscribed to your kids will love getting something in the mail every month. Even if you only do three months or six months, or if you can do a year of any of these subscription services, kids get so excited to get things in the mail. And bravery magazine basically highlights a very important character, historical character, and then they have the story of their life. And then they have why they were so brave and courageous what they did to really help our world.

Wendy:

Well, I hope you enjoyed hearing all of my ideas for holiday gifts and I hope you’re feeling creative. Like you want to maybe do something different for your kids this year, rather than just the normal toys from target. I hope that you really do get intentional and purposeful with the gifts that you give your kids and your spouse, and just know that we are here to support you. Wendy:
In today’s episode, we have stress balls that you can use to create calming kits for your kids. We have mood journals. We have feelings flashcards. I mean, there’s just so much more. Check out all the cool things that you can get for your kids this holiday season. And thanks for listening
